A word about formularies . . .
More health care corporations and facilities are establishing product formularies
in many areas, including wound dressings. Establishing a product formulary
limits the number of choices or brands of a particular product available
for routine use in a facility. With thoughtful planning, a product formulary
can be beneficial in that it allows for purchasing economies as well as
streamlining educational efforts. Many products vary slightly from brand
to brand and there may be nuances associated with optimal use (e.g., application
and removal). A product formulary can also promote communication in that
everyone is using the same brand of product and will have a similar experience
and familiarity with its use.
