Leading epidemiologists say a global return of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) — which wreaked havoc on the health care systems that had to deal with it — is almost inevitable. The current overriding concern is that SARS will resurface as a seasonal illness along with influenza and other respiratory infections. Indeed, it would be a surprising development if the emerging coronavirus did not return, said Julie Gerberding, MD, MPH, director of the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "As an infectious disease expert, I can say in my experience, I’ve never seen a pathogen emerge and go away on its own," she said. "I think we have to expect that somewhere, some time, this coronavirus is going to rear its ugly head again; and that’s the whole purpose of all this preparedness effort."
