HHS designates ISMP as Patient Safety Organization
The Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has designated the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) of Horsham, PA, as one of the first 10 Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs), according to a news release by ISMP.
PSOs were created as part of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005, to identify groups that share the goal of improving the quality of health care delivery and can give health care providers confidential, expert advice on the analysis of patient safety-related events.
ISMP began its national voluntary error reporting program in 1975 and has never compromised reporter identity.
Now the same information will have an even higher level of protection because of the PSO status, ISMP officials report.
The goal is to have health care providers continue to report their medication and device errors to ISMP. Then pharmacy and therapeutics, patient safety, and quality committees in hospitals, health systems, pharmacies, outpatient centers, clinics, and other health care organizations will be able to work with ISMP to aggregate and analyze their internal information.
This is expected to help identify and reduce risks associated with medication use in patient care.
