NIOSH will hold a “town hall” meeting to answer questions about healthcare worker injuries as part of the annual meeting of the Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP) in Myrtle Beach, SC, Sept. 7-10, 2016.
The September 8 NIOSH portion of the program will reveal data from 42,000 healthcare worker injuries that have been collected by the institute’s Occupational Health Safety Network (OHSN). Some 120 hospitals have entered data into the modules of the NIOSH electronic surveillance system to track injuries and gain insights on prevention. Some of the details to be discussed include the following:
- the prevalence and type of injuries for healthcare job categories,
- a look at factors that cause or contribute to slips, trips, and falls, patient handling and movement injuries, and workplace violence among healthcare personnel,
- to what degree are the various types of injuries preventable? Workplace strategies that can be implemented at the local level, and
- information on how to join and optimize use of the OHSN surveillance.
