Elements for obtaining ART informed consent
The Birmingham, AL-based American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has published a practice committee report on what elements should be included in the informed consent process for people undergoing assisted reproduction technology (ART). Below are the elements that should be covered for participants in oocyte donation.

A. Description of procedure including:
- Medical and psychological screening including genetic and infectious disease testing as applicable.
- Use of ovulation induction agents.
- Monitoring of cycle.
- Oocyte retrieval.
- Fertilization of oocytes.
- Potential cryopreservation of embryos.
B. Potential risks and discomforts (donor) including:
- Blood drawing.
- Ovulation, induction agents including allergic reactions, hyperstimulation, and the association with ovarian cancer.
- Antibiotics.
- Oocyte retrieval.
- Laboratory and clinical handling of gametes and embryos.
- Psychological issues.
C. Special considerations (recipient) including:
- Monitoring of cycle.
- Medications
- Failure to obtain oocytes, sperm, or embryos.
- Laboratory and clinical handling of gametes and embryos.
- Risks of congenital abnormalities.
- Potential Rh incompatibility.
- Transmission of viral infections, including HIV.
- Psychological issues.
D. Legal issues.
