News Brief: Thioguanine restricted to emergency use only
GlaxoSmithKline has restricted the use of thioguanine (Tabloid) 40 mg tablets to emergency use only due to a shortage caused by a "manufacturing issue." The medication is for the treatment of acute nonlymphocytic leukemias.
In a letter dated March 8, the company said there was currently no product available for pharmacy restocking and that it was supplying the medication directly to requesting pharmacies based on emergency need, and also said it was aggressively pursuing options for re-establishing supply working with the Food and Drug Administration and the manufacturer, DSM Catalytica Pharmaceuticals.
GlaxoSmithKline has established a toll-free number, (888) 527-6933, to handle inquiries and process emergency orders. Product requests should be made at least 72 hours in advance and no more than one week in advance of actual patient need. GlaxoSmithKline will send emergency shipments via overnight delivery directly to the pharmacies where emergency need has been established.
