Check Insurance Coverage for Natural Disasters

Healthcare organizations should know if they are adequately insured for natural disasters, suggests Bobbie Williams, vice president of the healthcare practice at Novatae, an insurance distributor in Dallas.
Williams urges healthcare organizations to review their policies with their insurance agents to understand what coverage they have for natural disasters and what additional coverage they might need. This is particularly important if a health system has moved into areas that are more prone to disasters, such as hurricanes, tornados, or wildfires. They might need an endorsement to cover additional risks, or there could be exclusions on the current policy.
“A lot of facilities don’t really consider this unless it’s an area like Florida, where there’s potential for heavy hurricanes and things like that,” Williams says. “They are used to those types of situations occurring and they have experienced them in the past. That has motivated them to take extra precautions.”
