Job outlook bright for health information techs
Health information technology is one of the 20 fastest growing occupations in the United States, according to a 1998 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report.
The report, called Health Technologists and Technicians, forecasts that employment growth for health information technicians (HITs), who are responsible for managing and analyzing patient records and other health information, is expected to outpace the average for all occupations through the year 2006.
According to the report, HITs held about 87,000 jobs in 1996, with the largest individual portion working in hospitals. However, employment opportunities in physicians' offices and clinics, nursing homes, and home health agencies are expected to grow even more rapidly. Employment opportunities in insurance, accounting, and law firms that handle health matters also are expected to increase.
