Post-test check for learning retention

The Burn Center staff at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock created a post test on fire safety to be given to students following a burn prevention presentation. The test is designed to reinforce learning. The 10 questions include:

1. Where do most burns occur?

[Over 75% of all burn injuries occur in the home.]

2. What age group is burned more than any other?

[Children five years old and younger. They often do things that they don't understand are dangerous.]

3. What do you do when your clothes are on fire?

[Stop, drop, and roll. Every step taken with clothes on fire makes it burn hotter, deeper, and leaves more scars.]

4. What is the most common cause of electrical burns in children?

[Biting on electrical cords because children like to put things in their mouths.]

5. At what temperature should your hot water heater be set?

[One-hundred and twenty degrees or medium. Hot water can cause a severe burn in just three to five seconds of contact.]

6. True or False: Children should stay out of the kitchen.

[True. Especially when someone is cooking.]

7. True or False: Cigarettes cannot ignite gasoline.

[False. Any source of spark, flame, or heat can ignite gasoline.]

8. True or False: New medicines can cure severe burns in two days.

[False. Burns take time to heal, sometimes months. They are almost always painful until they are healed.]

9. What kills most people in a house fire?

[Smoke. That is why smoke detectors are so important.]

10. What do you do if you get any kind of chemicals on your skin?

[Flush the area with water for a long time and tell an adult.]
