Post-test check for learning retention
The Burn Center staff at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock created a post test on fire safety to be given to students following a burn prevention presentation. The test is designed to reinforce learning. The 10 questions include:
1. Where do most burns occur?
[Over 75% of all burn injuries occur in the home.]
2. What age group is burned more than any other?
[Children five years old and younger. They often do things that they don't understand are dangerous.]
3. What do you do when your clothes are on fire?
[Stop, drop, and roll. Every step taken with clothes on fire makes it burn hotter, deeper, and leaves more scars.]
4. What is the most common cause of electrical burns in children?
[Biting on electrical cords because children like to put things in their mouths.]
5. At what temperature should your hot water heater be set?
[One-hundred and twenty degrees or medium. Hot water can cause a severe burn in just three to five seconds of contact.]
6. True or False: Children should stay out of the kitchen.
[True. Especially when someone is cooking.]
7. True or False: Cigarettes cannot ignite gasoline.
[False. Any source of spark, flame, or heat can ignite gasoline.]
8. True or False: New medicines can cure severe burns in two days.
[False. Burns take time to heal, sometimes months. They are almost always painful until they are healed.]
9. What kills most people in a house fire?
[Smoke. That is why smoke detectors are so important.]
10. What do you do if you get any kind of chemicals on your skin?
[Flush the area with water for a long time and tell an adult.]
