Separate polls conducted by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) indicate that many physicians and payers did not feel they would be ready to meet the government’s HIPAA security standards deadline of April 20.
To the contrary, those responding to the AMA and HIMSS polls said they still were working to meet earlier privacy and transaction regulation deadlines. The AMA survey revealed that about 35% of health care practices would not be ready to meet security standards by the late April deadline, and 20% of payers participating in the HIMSS poll said they would not be ready in time.
HIPAA set out a series of rules governing aspects of medical records privacy, electronic health care transactions, and security that were to go into effect over a two-year period.
